Want to make a strategic impact in animal welfare? HSSV is looking for a Director, Veterinary Services to provide strategic leadership to our Veterinary Services team. This opportunity reports directly to the Chief of Shelter Medicine and manages the team that delivers veterinary services and programs encompassing animals in our shelter and community. The Director, Veterinary Services will lead a team comprised of a management team along with 20-25 veterinary support staff in our state-of-the-art facility providing the highest standard of care. This individual will have a focus on building new shelter medicine and access to veterinary care programs and growing the team to establish world class practices. The Director, Veterinary Services will have the opportunity to expand HSSV’s leadership presence and participation in the state and national animal welfare arena.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Organizational Design – Partner with senior leadership to create roles, resource plans, metrics, and operational management that sets the team and Medical Center up for continued success aligned with HSSV goals.
  • Medical Processes – Collaborate with Veterinarian team and other stakeholders to update and develop protocols for the highest standards of veterinary care. Establish metrics to analyze and enhance veterinary operations. Leverage systems and tools to deliver on Medical Center goals.
  • Team Leadership – Build a high performing team comprised of medical managers and veterinary technicians and support staff. Spearhead team building, employee relations, communications, performance management, and goal setting. Coach managers to develop leadership and execution skills. Forecast hiring plans and drive hiring decisions for the team.
  • Training and Development - Develop plans and resources for the veterinary services staff in collaboration with the veterinary services management team. Identify ways to engage others in training strategies and expand access for cross-training to other internal stakeholders. Deliver on initiatives for professional development to increase skillset of veterinary services staff in their current roles and future career paths.
  • Compliance - Oversee regulatory compliance i.e., local, county, state, federal, OSHA, DEA, etc.
  • Financial Management – Drive overall budget management for the veterinary services department, including optimizing inventory, purchasing standards, staffing costs, etc.
  • Partner Management – Develop and maintain relationships with external veterinary partners and vendors to create and nurture partnerships with HSSV.
  • Program Delivery – Collaborate with the senior level management team of Shelter Operations and Community Programs and other internal stakeholders on various shelter medicine and access to care programs such as community vaccine and spay/neuter clinic, TNR, Wellness Waggin’, etc.
  • External/Media Communications – As a spokesperson for HSSV, represent the department and organization to the public and media.
  • Volunteer Program – Identify and execute on strategy for leveraging Medical Center volunteers in partnership with the Volunteer Department.


    • Successful people and operational management experience working in a highly collaborative environment with cross-functional management teams; veterinary practice preferred.
    • Experience in a non-veterinary hospital setting or other expert service delivery organization also considered.
    • Experience managing large staff within multi-level teams.
    • Ability to operate at a strategic and tactical level with a demonstrated ability to drive results and leverage technology to drive process change.
    • Effective problem-solving, process improvement, and decision-making abilities.
    • Ability to drive change management and build an organizational culture with resilient teams.
    • Willingness and ability to quickly adapt and adjust to the changing needs of the organization and community.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to a diverse range of audiences and settings.

    Work Days and Hours
    Hours are flexible and based on organizational need. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some holidays and weekends, depending on staffing needs.
